Product Description
Basic Concept
The concept was created originally for sound designers who are tired of having very few tools to create single-cycle waveforms, and even more tired of not having a quick and painless method of exporting those waveforms in standard formats without having to fiddle around with 5 separate applications just to get a single waveforms created properly. Since then, though, we have added significant functionality, as well as accrued quite a list of possible features that would make the tool into a set of tools, and would give it a broad market appeal to just about anyone who makes music.
Community Involvement
We have organized this project to get the sound design and audio production community involved where ever possible by opening a public discussion on KVR Audio to see what people have to say. It is our intention to continue working on new tools for this project until it is as useful as it can get, so please feel free to toss a suggestion in the discussion thread, or shoot us an e-mail with your idea. We’re happy to listen to suggestions and research each one and it’s benefits.
Pricing and Availability
Wave Designer will be discontinued as soon as we release our newest project, DesignDesk, which will have a Wave Designer module included, among many other tools. Unfortunately we were not able to create an OSX version of Wave Designer due to a variety of reasons. DesignDesk will have not only OSX and Windows compatibility, but it will also have dozens of new tools in a modular design environment.
Users who want to purchase Wave Designer anyways (on Windows) will receive a free “Wave Designer” only copy of DesignDesk, as well as a coupon code to upgrade to the full version of DesignDesk if they choose to do so.
The following is a list of features that the current iteration of Wave Designer currently contains. Each revision should bring additional features and fixes shown on the right side of the screen. As stated previously, this is an ongoing project that may take some time to complete, but will be our main focus, along with updating our Sound Repository for our users. Please feel free to contact us and suggest any features or format support, and we will do our best to include the most important and useful features for our V1 release.
- Node Editing: You can now design waveforms visually with the node editing features included in Wave Designer. The node editing screen allows 128 individual nodes to move, as well as a secondary approximation graph to show the curve of the waveform.
- Math Formula Editing: You can design waveforms with the included formula editor to build complex waveforms. Supported math functions currently include:
- TAN, TANH, ARCTAN, ARCTANH
- COS, COSH, ARCCOS, ARCCOSH
- SIN, SINH, ARCSIN, ARCSINH
- EXP, FACTORIAL, SQR, SQRT, POWER
- ROUND - Rounds to nearest integer
- FLOOR - Rounds down to nearest integer
- CEIL - Rounds up to nearest integer
- SIGN - Returns 1 if positive, -1 if negative, 0 otherwise
- FRAC - Returns the fractional part of a real number
- ABS - Returns the absolute value of a real number
- MIN - Returns the smaller of two numbers
- MAX - Returns the larger of two numbers
- RAND - Generates random, stepped waveforms
- NOISE - Generates random, smoother waveforms
- Basic synthesizer controls: While designing your waveforms in a VSTi enabled host, you can also control the output with an ADSR Envelope, Filter Envelope, Lowpass Filter and Master Volume
- .WAV Export: After creating your waveforms, you can then export them to either a standard 2048 sample single-cycle waveform for importing into many types of synthesizers, or you can choose to utilize the custom sample length ability for synthesizers which support larger or smaller size waveforms.
Below is a screenshot of the most recent version of Wave Designer. As time goes on, we will be adding more features and options for exporting particular formats, and we will continue to update the page so that the newest current iterations are available right here. This particular screenshot shows the formula editor, utilizing the new noise(x) function, which allows users to create random waveforms with very little effort, and the ability to set the amount of randomness (from 0.0 to 1.0).
Downloads
Below you will find some downloads related to Wave Designer. Any downloadable waveforms have been created at 2048 samples, which is the standard for most supported synthesizers. We’re also going to add some good free formula and node-based presets from the newest version (0.3.10) to utilize with Wave Designer.
